Keyboard Program

PianoThe Keyboard Program within the Department of Music emphasizes a comprehensive curriculum of solo performance, pedagogy, accompanying, and chamber music within a broad array of degree programs. Our students receive thorough training and guidance from a renowned faculty giving each student the attention they need.
Students have many opportunities to perform at Northern Kentucky University, not only as soloists, but also in select chamber music ensembles which are coached by faculty as part of our course curriculum. Master classes provide an opportunity for collective feedback on the progress of the ensembles and time for the assembled faculty and students to discuss specific topics of interest.

Accomplishments of Keyboard Faculty Members

  • Performed nationally and internationally with such renowned ensembles as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Manhattan Transfer, and have collectively been featured on over 20 compact disk recordings.
  • Received numerous Grants and Honors (Fulbright Grant, Meet the Composer Grant, Harold Bauer Award at Manhattan School of Music, "Honored Artist Ukraine" designation).
  • Studied with renowned teachers (Mieczyslaw Munz, Gustav Leonhardt, James Tocco, Artur Balsam, Seymour Lipkin, Malcomb Bilson, and Regina Horowitz).
  • Won national and international piano competitions (McEloy piano competition, Lysenko International Music Competition, Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, Milosh Magin International Piano Competition).
  • Performed with internationally recognized musicians (Metropolitan Opera star Rose Bampton, violinist Harold Byers, jazz trumpeter Malachi Thompson, Patti Labelle, and the Supremes).

Certificate in Piano Pedagogy
The Certificate in Piano Pedagogy is a flexible semester-hour program designed to help pianists and teachers develop their skills in the art of teaching piano and in operating a financially successful independent teaching studio. Courses may be completed in two years or taken at the student's own pace. NKU Piano Pedagogy Certificate students will be accepted through audition with the university piano faculty. Transfer credits may be approved by examination, and students holding other college degrees may enroll as post-baccalaureate students.

Certificate credits may apply toward a Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, Associate of Arts, or a minor in music, pending approval of the keyboard faculty. The National Conference of Piano Pedagogy recognizes the Certificate in Piano Pedagogy as a "significant and viable alternative for pianists and teachers who wish to develop their skills in the art of piano teaching without pursuing a conventional degree program."
