Music Composition Studies

At NKU, you will have the chance to learn the "how and why" of music. Music Theory and Musicianship studies are a basic component of all music degrees. NKU offers a standard undergraduate curriculum of four semesters of theory (a thorough grounding in the techniques and evolution of tonal music), four concurrent semesters of aural skills (in which you learn to sing melodies at sight and transcribe music that you hear), and four concurrent semesters of keyboard skills (in which you develop basic keyboard skills and the materials covered in the theory and aural skills classes are reinforced).

In addition to the basic curriculum, NKU also offers upper-division classes in Form and Analysis, Orchestration, Non-Tonal Theory, and Counterpoint. These courses contribute to the total musician, allowing students to delve deeper into musical analysis and understanding. Seminars on topics of interest in the field of music theory are offered as well. Students are encouraged to take seminars on topics that interest them.
