American Choral Directors Association (ACDA)Founded in 1959, the American Choral Directors Association is a nonprofit music education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research and teaching. In addition, ACDA strives to elevate choral music's position in American society through art's advocation. Comprised of future choral directors, the student chapter focuses on helping members become more familiar with the national organization and its goals. Activities help members understand what constitutes excellence in choral music and helps them learn how to reach that standard.
Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC)
The purpose of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC) is to provide future music educators with a connection to the professional world of music education and increased understanding of the role of the Music Educators National Conference in the field of music teaching. Through local, state and national meetings students gain knowledge and development regarding philosophy of music education, teaching methods and materials, exposure to the music industry and contact with others in the field of music education.
Kappa Kappa Psi
Kappa Kappa Psi is a National Honorary Fraternity for College Band members. The organization operates exclusively in the field of the college and university bands as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director of Bands in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that is required of his/her band. Its goals are to provide the band with organized and concentrated service activities and give members wholesome experiences in organization, leadership and social contacts.
The honorary nature of membership is based on the premise that "it is an honor to be selected to serve" the band, its Department of Music, and its sponsoring institution in the nation's colleges and universities. On the local level, chapter responsibilities include numerous concentrated service projects as well as providing the intangible items of morale, spirit, enthusiasm, atmosphere and attitude within the band.
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia
The primary purpose of this fraternity is to encourage and actively promote the highest standards of creativity, performance, education, and research in music in America. It also strives to develop and encourage loyalty to the Alma Mater, to foster the mutual welfare and brotherhood to students of music, develop the truest fraternal spirit among its members, and to install in all people an awareness of music's important role in the enrichment of the human spirit. Membership is open to any male who is a student in good academic standing or faculty/staff member at Northern Kentucky University who shows love for music by adopting music as his profession or works to advance the cause of music in America.
Pi Kappa Lambda
Pi Kappa Lambda is a national honor society in music recognized by membership in the Association of College Honor Societies. Established more than 70 years ago, its purpose is to honor scholarship, musicianship and personal character. Invitations are extended for membership in Pi Kappa Lambda to only the highest ranking students (the top 10%) from junior, senior and graduate classes. The elections are the privilege of the Faculty Committee who are active members of the Eta Phi Chapter at NKU.
Sigma Alpha Iota
Sigma Alpha Iota is an international fraternity for women in music-at present over 300 chapters and 82,000 initiated members. Members include undergraduates and graduates in music, alumnae, professional musicians and outstanding music patrons. In addition to personal encouragement and support, members may receive scholarships, loans and awards in many areas and at all levels of music related study. Sigma Alpha Iota has long been recognized as a leader in the field of music and provides a lifetime of fraternity contact.
